Out Now! | Total Slacker | THRASHIN' | tape

Just arrived here!

+ + + + + + +

Our favourite psych-grunge trio from New York have been busy polishing their sound in anticipation of the release of their long-awaited debut album. To celebrate Thrashin’ being released on September 26 by Marshall Teller Records/Sixteen Tambourines, Tucker, Emily and Ross have generously given us the premier of their amazing video for ‘Thyme Travelling High School Dropout’ and shared two new recordings with us!

Collated from amazing vintage VHS bible college training videos and instructional dance videos, ‘Thyme Travelling High School Dropout’ is the latest of Tucker’s video art that awesomely suits the band’s fun, collaborative approach.

‘Psychic Mesa’ has been floating around in demo form for ages but in its final cut sounds slowed down into a dreamscape of perfect grunge. The new mix allows us to hear everything more clearly – particularly Emily’s sweet vocals – while reigning in Tucker’s guitar-slaying. The pure pop of ‘Shitty Baby’ has an Iggy-style vocal rant verse that floats into a psych chorus, with driving riffs and sing-along melodies throughout. The band sounds honed in and really focused, while keeping the fun spirit alive in just over two minutes!

The contrast between the rough and raw demos and these new tracks is blinding when you revisit the old recordings, and it’s so great to hear them at their best and clearest. They’ve been steadily growing – playing sold out shows with the Rapture in NYC, touring and getting signed for their debut. We can’t wait to hear the full LP! ( via EINSTEIN MUSIC JOURNAL )

Just Out Now! :: Witch Gardens // Tan Dollar Split 7 inch

witch gardens * witch gardens * witch gardens
witch gardens * witch gardens * witch gardens

Witch Gardens are four friends who love playing music together and writing songs in the kitchen of the modest home where ½ of the band live. They've written winsome pop songs about cheaters, liars, brooms, windshield wipers, and woodpeckers, and have established themselves as "a band to fuck with in Seattle." The boy-girl-girl-girl group has been called the cutest band in Seattle more times than they can count. Guitarist/vocalist Casey Catherwood has been a booker/performer/chiller in the Seattle DIY scene since he was 13 (previously he played with Little Party and the Bad Business); Witch Gardens is the first band for drummer Sara Beabout, bassist Beth Corry, and Autoharpist Karolyn Kukoski.

Previously, Witch Gardens has performed with bands like Deerhoof, Grass Widow, Marnie Stern, and the Vivian Girls. They released a split cassette with the post-punk band Stephanie that included full-color Topps-style trading cards for every member of the band. It sold out in two days and those songs are being repressed on a cassette due out in late May/early June from Boston's Wonder Beard Records. The band also has a 7" vinyl single called "Rain Delay" out in July on Seattle label Highfives and Handshakes (Christmas, U.S.F., Alaskas) and another 7" split with Orange County band Tan Dollar on the way from Japanese label Sixteen Tambourines. ( via cityartsfest )

Delighted to see that California pop group Tan Dollar has returned with You’re Pure Gold and Full Bloom.

New Release :: Total Slacker :: THRASHIN' :: Released on mid or end of August!

Tucker Rountree can shred. Though you may not know from watching him lead a Total Slacker show, or even listening to a song, but the lanky Brooklyn golden-hair has even played with renowned guitarist Eric Johnson.  Much like a technically proficient painter chooses to paint with abstraction rather than landscapes, Rountree chooses the jangly, pop-infused chords rather than hammer-ons and scales for Total Slacker.  These ideals intact, the slow-drip Total Slacker creates easy-going pop melodies akin to Bowie/Ronson-produced Transformer and though the band early on had roots in lo-fi, its seems they’ve  ditched that for a glossier production on their upcoming release THRASHIN. Album-opener”Psychic Mesa” seethes with crunchy guitar and words of an eerie combine of hippies, farmers, and other stranger characters all living amongst each other and gaining magic powers from living on an alien crash/burial site. There is abstraction for you. ( via weeklytapedeck )

Julia Holter | Eating The Stars + Live on KDVS | DOUBLE TAPE | Released on 07 July

Tokyo imprint Sixteen Tambourines is again well ahead of all things hip and nifty with their forthcoming release of Julia Holter‘s Eating the Stars cassette, due toward the end of June – though actually we’re not talking about a “new” effort but rather about the re-release of an album that originally had been put out on CD by Human Ear in 2007 and that had been out of print for the last three years. Strictly limited to only 40 copies, the tape features eight tunes of the LA-based experimental folk artist. Office of the Dead perfectly exemplifies what her music is about, complex yet fragile and beautiful folk arranged that are carried by Holter’s sweet and crystal-clear voice, enriched with quite a lot of nature-leaning chirps and squeaks.

Pre-order Eating the Stars here, or head over here to grab the even more exciting double cassette, coming bundled with a rad Live on KDVS tape. (via NO FEAR OF POP)

Melted Toys | Tape | Washed & Dried | Released on 07 July

In the span of 25 minutes, Washed & Dried emulates a meandering and bright feeling that doesn’t just come and go quickly, as a recurrent trend in most EPs leading up to a proper full-length. This Bay Area trio delivers hazy pop songs that linger and let loose right when you forget you’re knocked out by the hypnotic guitar lines and steady percussive ways of the drum machine.

Genre-wise, Melted Toys seems to have a firm grasp on subtlety, without leaning towards the slacker-underachiever mentality. Seconds in to the stunning opener “Come On,” the guitar makes an introduction with a mesmeric line that’s so infectious, you’re immediately drawn in to what’s ahead. And yes, they do have a little Casio making some noise as well on select tracks, but this is far from a synth-pop sound. The instrumental elevator jam “Neuzone” serves as a nice halfway point with its airy, simmering array of textures driven by Brian Wakefield’s bass. It’s refreshing to catch a band where each instrument and lyric is no more impacting than the next. Playful at times, intimate at others, these seven songs might serve as the best soundtrack for your daydreams; good luck not keeping this EP on repeat. (via AUDIO MILK)

Subtle reverbed textures, a throbbing rhythm that sounds like a human heart, and a singer that pronounces the word "tip" like it has three or four "e"s stuck in it-- Porcelain Raft mastermind Mauro Remiddi's from Sweden, right? Well, no: he's originally from Rome, but he lives in London now, and over the past year he's been making the kind of intimate-sounding, homespun guitar pop that seems to be in short supply these days. He's done sparkling, slow-burning anthems ("Dragonfly"), as well as amorphous; "Tip of Your Tongue", on the other hand, sounds lovingly ripped from the catalog of venerable Swedish indie Labrador, right down to the way the strung-out guitar lines intertwine. The melody is instantly familiar and earworm-worthy-- so much the former, in fact, that you might rack your brain for a while trying to think of where you've previously heard it. Which brings you back to the title. ( via Pitchfork of October 19, 2010 )

If you’re a fan of Beach House, you may as well stop reading now and skip down to the song at the bottom of this post ? this is definitely for you. The whole dream pop thing has been tried by many, but few manage to pull it off with the skilful elegance that it requires ? which is what made Teen Dream so exceptional upon it’s release. He might not have an album out yet, but Porcelain Raft’s efforts to date certainly rank higher than most in scaling the heights of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally’s effort from earlier in the year.
That’s not to say that the songs made are merely replicating an a near-perfect formula ? Mauro Remiddi is the person behind the moniker, and there’s a personality within these icy, distant beats. Each track is an exercise in balancing pure pop and atmospheric ambience, with the results differing only in their style but rarely in their magnificence. ‘Tip of your Tongue’ could easily be on some of the better commercial radio stations thanks to it’s catchy chorus, but you’d be hard pressed to find ‘I found a way’ gracing even the most experimental graveyard shift show. ( via THE PIGEON POST of June 28, 2010 )

We have new releases in beginning of 2011.
One of these is for Porcelain Raft.
We really want to release Porcelain Raft's songs since summer in 2010.
So, really love and joyous that our label can release this cassette.

RAW THRILLS :: SHAKE DOWN :: LP

STR 023 RAW THRILLS :: SHAKE DOWN :: LP
RELEASED on early or mid February, 2011
This vinyl drop limited 300 colored vinyl & first 50 copies with bonus cassette including unreleased 13 songs.

RAW THRILLS is solo project of Zak Mering from Greatest Hits and The Sweethearts.  This LP out mid February on Sixteen Tambourines Records.

The 14 new tracks are more falsetto croons over soft-muffle guitars, drum machine thud and outer space synthesizers, often dipping into 50s doo-wop loverboy mode. There's the luxurious tones of "Making Love on a Piano." There's the tropical bounce of "Coconuts." There's "Sonia," something bleak and cold, something that might normally have a super deep-voiced guy gutting like Silk Flowers. Instead, Zak floats in higher registers, layering voices to create this choir effect which, when coupled with vibraphone sounds (or something), gets real deep on some Church of X-Files business.  ( via Friendship Bracelet )

On his new Shakedown LP, Raw Thrills offers 14 new tracks of falsetto croons over soft-muffle guitars, drum machine thud, and outer space synthesizers -- often dipping into '50s doo-wop loverboy mode. There's the luxurious tones of "Making Love on a Piano". There's the tropical bounce of "Coconuts". There's "Sonia", something bleak and cold, something that might normally have a super deep-voiced guy gutting in the background, like Silk Flowers. ( via ALTERED ZONE )
